Conserving Alfred East paintings ...

The newly conserved painting of Lake Bourget returned to the Alfred East Gallery in 2017

Over recent years the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum have helped fund a significant programme of conservation of the large canvasses that make up the national Alfred East collection.

Michaela Straub has written about her work on the paintings here

Halloween was celebrated at the Museum on Friday

Face painting, lucky dip, spooky tales and pinning a tail on the black cat ... plus pumpkins, skeleton bookmarks and fancy dress.   And then there were the youngsters!

Don't forget next month's evening talk ... on Northampton's national Leather Collection.

Philip Warner is curator of the collection and will be giving us a guide to collection and its fascinating story.

What's on at the Art Gallery and Museum ...

The Development of Brass Instruments was very entertaining, and was a different sort of evening for us at the Gallery.  The acoustics are very good so we should have music more often ...

Perhaps in addition rather than instead of monthly talks on art and history?

Alfred East Etchings

Unfortunately I missed the exhibition opening - but I got my copy of the new book and a browse around the exhibition whilst I was down for the talk.

It's a must - the book and the exhibition.  East was prolific and accomplished.  And this is probably the definitive collection.

Some will be unfamiliar subjects, some reflect East's work in oils.

So there is a Halloween event at the Museum on the 28th
The KDAS exhibition is now on the Large Gallery
Kettering Cooperatives has just opened at the Museum
There's a series of films in the Gallery
... and the etchings exhibition.

It'll take more than one visit.

The Railway came to the Gallery ...

Some pictures from the very well attended talk at the Gallery earlier this month ... Full to capacity for a fabulous look at Kettering's railway past.

Lake Bourget returns to the Alfred East Art Gallery

March also saw the return to the gallery, after extensive conservation, of Alfred East's imposing painting of Lake Bourget ...

A sizeable crowd gathered for the unveiling which was combined with a preview of 'Around the World in 18 Frames' and a special showing of 'The English in Aix'

Aix Les Bains rests on the shores of Lake Bourget and was a fashionable choice for Victorians (and Victoria herself) escaping the English Winter.

Claire Delorme of the Grapevine association from Aix was a special guest at the unveiling - Grapevine celebrates and explores the English connection and has done much to enhance Alfred East's reputation in the French resort ...

(Friends President Phillip Hollobone MP along with the Mayor, Gallery Officer Katie Coleman and Claire Delorme in front of  a revealed Lake Bourget)

The conservation was funded by the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum

You can see Alfred East's Lake Bourget from Mont Revard in the Small Gallery ... drop by during the day or make an evening of it at the Friends AGM (which will be followed by a talk by outgoing Chair John Wilson on the theme of Friends Associations around the world) ..

There is so much more going on.
